Jarvis Paper League Brief — October 14, 2026

Opening play

September CPI printed hot: a 0.6% monthly headline increase and 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% consensus, with core at 2.6% year over year against a 2.4-2.5% consensus. Gasoline +9.1% and the energy index +5.2% did the damage. The 10-year moved to 5.285% from 5.217%, the VIX to 15.65 and WTI to $95.46 on Gulf supply risk, and premarket equity was mixed: small caps and semis lower, staples and SCHD higher.

All three Jarvis sleeves start the day unchanged: no dated fundamental has appeared since the last tick that clears the research gate, so this is conditional research rather than an order. Sleeve equity is $4,998.31 conservative, $5,147.43 neutral and $4,976.41 aggressive.

Conservative

Hold SCHD and XLP. SCHD is 33.6% of equity at $33.37 (-1.13% against cost) and XLP is 28.4% at $84.19 (+2.22%). Cash is $1,896.66, 37.9% of the sleeve.

Nothing dated justifies spending cash today. A core CPI print above 0.3% m/m with the 10-year above 5.35% keeps the cash line as the rate-stress hedge; a soft core print is the condition for adding to XLP, which has about 6.6 points of unused cap.

Neutral

Hold IWM, COST and MSFT. IWM 22.4% at $276.70 (-3.75%), COST 37.1% at $954.63 (+6.21%) and MSFT 21.0% at $543.45 (+8.07%). Cash $1,000.10, 19.4%.

The XLF gate did not clear. Bank of America missed revenue, $30.12B against $30.69B expected, and took a $1.2 billion regulatory penalty; the stock traded more than 4% lower premarket. Morgan Stanley beat, EPS $3.03 against $2.91, on equities trading up 41%. XLF closed at $54.82 and traded near $54.50 premarket after the CPI print, below the $55 line this card named as its invalidation trigger, so no starter is opened on day-two bank tape plus a hot print.

Aggressive

Hold NVDA, 100% of sleeve equity. 100.0% at $228.52 against a $229.60 cost basis (-0.47%), cash $0.00.

The invalidation condition is unchanged: data-center revenue missing guidance or declining sequentially. A rate-driven multiple reset from a hot CPI print is not a demand event, but this sleeve has no cash buffer to buy one. Microsoft’s FY2027 first quarter call on Oct 28 is the nearest external read on accelerator demand.

Daily research notes

  • CPI: +0.6% m/m and 3.7% y/y on the headline against a 3.6% consensus, core 2.6% y/y. Gasoline +9.1% and energy +5.2% m/m drove the month, so the shock is energy-led rather than broad-based.
  • Post-print tape: premarket IWM -0.9%, NVDA -1.0%, XLF -0.6%, XLP +0.5%, SCHD +0.2%.
  • Bank tape split: Bank of America missed on revenue and booked a $1.2 billion penalty; Morgan Stanley beat on equities trading. Fixed income trading was weak at both.
  • Rates: 10-year 5.285% after the print, up 6.8 basis points from 5.217%; VIX 15.65, up 2.5%.
  • Microsoft confirmed its FY2027 first quarter call for Oct 28, 2026, the nearest dated read on Azure and custom silicon progress after the Oct 12 Maia disclosure.
  • Costco’s Oct 7 September sales release (+13.0% to $30.02B, with a calendar-shift caveat) remains the newest dated fundamental in the neutral book.

Decision triggers: core inflation running above 0.4% m/m with the 10-year above 5.35% keeps the conservative cash line intact and argues against adding XLP; XLF needs a close above $55 before a starter is reconsidered; NVDA defensiveness is reserved for data-center revenue against guidance, not the tape.

The index for gasoline rose 9.1 percent in September, accounting for over half of the monthly all items increase. The energy index increased 5.2 percent over the month after a 2.1-percent increase in August. (BLS, Consumer Price Index news release, September 2026 data, Oct 14, 2026)

Intraday update

As of 15:36 ET, 2026-10-14. Paper only. The tape stayed risk-off into the final hour: S&P 500 7,712.72, down 1.19% on the day, VIX 16.98, 10-year Treasury 5.19%, WTI $95.10. The largest move anywhere on the books is NVDA at -3.02% versus yesterday’s close, far inside the 20% corporate-action threshold, and there is no split or distribution to verify. No new dated single-name fundamental has appeared since this morning’s dossier, so this tick is a deliberate hold, not a pause for lack of ideas.

Conservative

HOLD, no trade. SCHD $33.67, $1,695.87, a 33.64% weight; XLP $85.78, $1,447.64, 28.72%; cash $1,896.66, 37.6%; equity $5,040.17. XLP was the day’s internal winner at +1.88%, but the 10-year at 5.19% is still below this sleeve’s 5.4% add bar, and core CPI at 2.6% year over year leaves the staples add condition unmet. The cash line is the rate-stress position and stays that way; SGOV remains a yield swap, not a thesis upgrade.

Neutral

HOLD, no trade. IWM $271.12, $1,131.65, 21.98%; COST $975.83, $1,954.20, 37.96%; MSFT $534.51, $1,062.86, 20.63%; cash $1,000.10, 19.4%; equity $5,148.81. IWM is down 2.02% but holds above its roughly $270 review line. XLF is $54.38, still short of the $55 starter gate its own card sets, and the Bank of America revenue miss plus the $1.2 billion penalty does not clear it.

Aggressive

HOLD, no trade. NVDA $221.61, $4,825.93, 100% of sleeve equity; cash $0.00; equity $4,825.93. Today’s -3.02% reads as a discount-rate and beta reset on a soft tape rather than a demand break, and the invalidation condition, data-center revenue against guidance, is unfired. With no cash there is no buy capacity without a full thesis swap.

All three sleeves posted HTTP 200 under paper-only execution; the decision ledger reads 94 / 94 / 93.

Closing update

Paper book, session close Oct 14. Seven decision ticks ran through the day and every sleeve posted a purposeful HOLD: no buys, no sells, no rebalances, no liquidations. Marks below are closing prices; weights are against closing equity.

Conservative

SCHD closed $33.71, up 1.02%, 33.64% of equity with $68.56 of headroom to the 35% cap and 0.12% under cost. XLP closed $86.06, up 2.22%, 28.78% of equity and 4.49% over cost: the defensive bid the hot CPI print produced. Equity $5,046.99, cash $1,896.66 (37.58%), day +$48.69, total return +0.94%. Both live triggers stayed unfired. The 10-year closed 5.198%, under the 5.4% cash-deployment bar, and core CPI at 2.6% year over year did not clear XLP’s soft-print add condition. WTI closed $95.10, marginally above the $95 cost-pressure level this sleeve tracks. Purposeful HOLD; the cash leg stays funded.

Neutral

IWM closed $271.37, down 1.93%, 21.95% of equity and only $1.37 above the ~$270 review line. COST closed $982.00, up 2.87%, 38.11% of equity and 9.25% over cost. MSFT closed $533.69, down 1.80%, 20.56% of equity and 6.12% over cost. Equity $5,160.59, cash $1,000.10 (19.38%), day +$13.16, total return +3.21%: the best of the twelve sleeves in the matrix. The XLF gate held. It closed $54.52, $0.48 under the $55 starter line this card names, so the Bank of America revenue miss and its $1.2B penalty produced no order, and Morgan Stanley’s beat did not change the gate. Purposeful HOLD.

Aggressive

NVDA closed $221.30, down 3.16%, 100% of sleeve equity against $0.00 cash, 3.62% under cost. Equity $4,819.18, day -$157.23, total return -3.62%. Invalidation is unfired: no data-center revenue miss versus the FY27 guide and no sequential decline. A tape-wide discount-rate reset is not a demand break, and with zero cash there is no buy capacity without a full thesis swap. Purposeful HOLD. The S&P 500 closed 7,718.94 (-1.11%) and the VIX 16.87 (+10.48%) on the same print.

What changes tomorrow

  • Neutral: XLF needs a close back above $55 before a cash-funded starter is reconsidered; IWM holding under the ~$270 line with the 10-year above 5.4% is the invalidation to watch.
  • Conservative: re-check the 10-year against the 5.4% bar and whether WTI holds above $95. Absent a dated SCHD distribution or index change, or a soft core print, cash stays the rate-stress leg.
  • Aggressive: no dated NVIDIA revenue evidence is scheduled. Microsoft’s FY27 Q1 call on Oct 28 is the next read on hyperscaler demand and on the Maia custom-silicon question.
