Shedd Aquarium: Evolving for the Future of Our Oceans
A Legacy of Curiosity and Conservation
Since opening its doors in 1930, the Shedd Aquarium has served as a window into the aquatic world for millions of visitors. But the institution is currently undergoing a profound transformation, shifting its focus from mere exhibition to active, global conservation and immersive education.
From Chicago to Indonesia: The Zebra Shark Initiative

One of the most striking examples of Shedd’s global impact is its partnership with ReShark and the StAR Project (Stegostoma tigrinum Augmentation and Recovery). In July 2026, the aquarium achieved a significant milestone by sending four zebra shark eggs to Raja Ampat, Indonesia. This effort aims to bolster endangered wild populations of the Indo-Pacific Leopard Shark through scientifically managed breeding and strategic translocations.
By utilizing a process called candling—shining a light through the egg casing to monitor embryo development—Shedd’s animal care team ensures that only the healthiest, most genetically diverse eggs are sent to the Raja Ampat Research and Conservation Centre (RARCC), extending their expertise 9,000 miles beyond Chicago.
Evolution in Progress: Redefining the Visitor Experience
While their conservation work reaches across oceans, the physical site in Chicago is also evolving. The “Evolution in Progress” initiative is redesigning how guests interact with nature. A centerpiece of this change is the upcoming Changing Oceans gallery, expected in early 2027. This immersive experience will focus on ocean habitats and the urgent realities of climate change, taking visitors from the sounds of rushing surf to the depths of the Caribbean Tunnel.
Other updates include the refreshed Amazon Rising exhibit, where guests can explore the biodiversity of the Amazon River basin, and the upcoming Lakeside Learning Studio, which will move education spaces from the basement into the core of the aquarium experience.

Connecting with Nature in the Urban Core
Despite the large-scale renovations, the heart of the Shedd experience remains the intimate connection between humans and animals. Through Exploration Stations and surprise encounters with animal ambassadors—like Beni the spectacled owl or the resident macaws—the aquarium sparks a sense of wonder. Seasonal highlights, such as the penguin nesting season in the Polar Play Zone, offer a rare glimpse into the natural life cycles of rockhopper and Magellanic penguins.

A Vision for a Thriving Planet
Shedd’s overarching mission is to spark compassion, curiosity, and conservation. By blending world-class animal care with cutting-edge research and public engagement, they are not just showcasing aquatic life—they are fighting to sustain it. Whether through a petition to keep sharks swimming or the delivery of a single shark egg to a distant reef, the Shedd Aquarium continues to prove that an urban institution can be a powerful catalyst for global environmental change.
