Simon Paper League Brief — September 29, 2026

Paper League day card for 29 September 2026: index moves, Simon's three sleeve returns, and the 10-year yield and WTI close
The day in one card: index moves, Simon's three sleeves, and the rates and oil close. Chart by Oddbyte.

Opening play

S&P 500 futures are flat before Tuesday’s open after Monday’s 0.77% drop to 7,683.69. The 10-year Treasury settled at 5.241% on Monday, a 19-year high, and holds near 5.24% this morning with roughly 70% odds of an October hike priced; PCE lands Wednesday. WTI is $90.80, down 1.9%, and Brent $104.01 as Saudi East-West pipeline flows return to about 3.5 million barrels a day. Falling oil against a 19-year yield is a rotation tape, not a chase tape: no sleeve is adding at the open, and every sleeve’s cash is held against a written trigger.

Conservative: $4,953.89 equity, $624.23 cash (12.60%)

Ten lines, largest XLV 11.59% against the 35% cap, then VOO 10.01%, KO 9.90%, XLF 9.47%, JNJ 9.17%, BRK.B 9.03%, PG 8.13%, VIG 8.00%, WMT 7.99%, XLE 4.12%. Measured from the 09-14 close through the 09-28 close, with the S&P 500 up 0.84%: XLF -4.98%, a 5.82pp lag, and 4.94% below its 50-day average (57.00); KO -2.43% (-3.26pp); XLE -3.77% (-4.60pp) but still 0.41% above its 50-day; BRK.B -2.30% (-3.14pp); VIG -1.26% (-2.10pp). XLF’s rule needs a steeper curve with widening credit: 2s10s is +36bp (10y 5.17, 2y 4.81) and high-yield spreads are 2.93% at the 09-25 print, up 27bp from 2.66% four sessions earlier but still cycle-tight, a drift rather than a credit-negative turn. No written rule fired, and XLE’s $85 WTI exit stands at $90.80.

Neutral: $4,982.03 equity, $6.96 cash (0.14%)

MSFT 28.86% is the largest line against the 60% cap, then XLV 15.07%, TSM 11.34%, XLE 10.76%, COST 10.18%, JPM 9.96%, XLF 8.64%, GOOGL 5.03%. Trends split: TSM +8.34% and 7.50% above its 50-day against JPM -3.87% and 4.72% below, and XLF -4.98% and 4.94% below. Micron’s $1,150 re-entry is unmet at $1,053.98, so nothing is bought; $6.96 funds no position, so a new name here starts with a funded sale.

Aggressive: $4,882.64 equity, $445.05 cash (9.12%)

NVDA 69.55% and META 21.33%, with cash up from $11.67 after Monday’s rule-driven META trim. NVDA is $228.86, +1.68% Monday and 5.71% above its 50-day (216.50), after the record $150B buyback increase lifted its remaining authorization to $235B; META is $715.62, -4.79% Monday but still 15.96% above its 50-day. META’s re-entry needs a $751.66 reclaim, unmet by 4.8%. The trim proceeds stay cash until price, not the buyback headline, sets the entry.

Daily research notes

  • Triggers, not views. Conservative: XLE up to $400 only at $61.50 or better, or BRK.B up to $250 while the 10-year holds above 5.20%. Neutral: MU alert at $1,150. Aggressive: add from the $445.05 only above $225 on a settled print or on a pullback into $215-220; META re-add at $751.66.
  • Rates decide the tape. 2y 4.94%, 5y 5.07%, 30y 5.55%; the 10-year is up about 46bp in September. Long-duration equity carries the risk, and BRK.B’s float and short-Treasury book are the hedge against it.
  • Oil is the swing factor. XLE’s hedge case weakens if Saudi flows and a Hormuz reopening keep pushing WTI toward the $85 exit, while Brent at $104 still prices real supply risk.
  • Concentration is the aggressive question. That sleeve is 90.88% in two AI names; NVDA’s 69.55% weight and 7.65pp ten-session relative win decide it.

Intraday update

The 15:33 ET tick found no written invalidation satisfied on completed sessions, so all three Simon sleeves held their books into the close. The tape was flat: S&P 500 7,673 (-0.13%), Nasdaq 26,806 (-0.05%), VIX 16.04, the 10-year at 5.255% and WTI down 3.6% to $89.25 as Saudi flows recovered.

Conservative

Held all nine lines. Cash $667.95 (13.6%) and equity $4,927.26. Energy’s XLE is -4.60pp behind the S&P 500 over ten sessions, but WTI $89.25 stays above the $85 exit and the 09:32 $400 add at $61.14 is not repeated at $61.52. XLF -5.82pp still needs a steeper curve with widening credit, and HY OAS at 3.02% remains cycle-tight. KO has one settled close under its 50-day average; a second is its exit.

Neutral

Held all eight lines. Cash $6.96, equity $4,982.89. MSFT is 28.9% of the book against the 60% cap and 6.5% above its 50-day average, with the Azure rule unmet. TSM leads at +7.51pp. COST, GOOGL, JPM and XLF are the laggards, but their conditions need either comps below 4% or wider credit. Micron at $1,070.01 stays under its $1,150 alert, and nothing was fundable from $6.96.

Aggressive

Held NVDA and META. Cash $5.05, equity $4,892.64. NVDA at $227.86 (-0.44%) is 78.1% of the sleeve, far above its $215 trim level and 5.7% over its 50-day average, with no data-centre revenue miss against guidance. META at $732.83 rose 2.4% while the Nasdaq was flat, so the relative-strength trim did not fire, and it remains 2.5% below the written $751.66 re-add.

Closing update

The regular session ended at 16:00 ET; all marks are 16:00 prints. The S&P 500 closed 7,670.84 (-0.17%) and the Nasdaq Composite 26,797.54 (-0.09%). The 30-year yield hit its highest since 2002 as WTI fell 3.9% to $89.02 on recovering Middle East exports. Three trades were made; every other line was held.

Conservative: $4,928.13 equity, $667.95 cash (13.6%)

Two trades. At 09:32 ET the written $61.50 rule bought $400 of XLE at $61.14, taking the smallest line to 12.3%, the top weight within the 35% cap; XLE closed 61.54 with WTI above the $85 exit, so no repeat. At 13:34 ET the entire 0.88476436 BRK.B line was sold at $501.5150 after three settled closes printed below its rolling 50-day average – the written invalidation, which also cancelled the $250 add branch. KO closed 86.84, one close under its 87.59 50-day. Day change -0.52%; since the 09-22 stake, -1.44% versus -1.29% for the index.

Neutral: $4,974.98 equity, $6.96 cash

No trades: seven HOLDs, every line held. MSFT eased 0.05% to 508.96, still 28.9% of equity against the 60% cap, 6.5% over its 50-day, Azure rule unmet. TSM was strongest, +0.90% to 456.94. JPM -0.48% and XLF -0.33% stay gated on wider credit; high-yield spreads of 3.02% are still cycle-tight. MU closed 1,065.08, short of the $1,150 alert; $6.96 funds nothing. Day change -0.14%; since the 09-22 stake, -0.50% versus -1.29%.

Aggressive: $4,885.33 equity, $5.05 cash

One trade: at 10:31 ET, on the written condition of a settled print above $225, $440 of NVDA was bought at $230.645, taking cash from $445.05 to $5.05. NVDA closed 227.21 (-0.72%), 77.9% of equity, above the $215 trim and 5.7% over its 50-day, with no data-centre revenue miss against guidance. META drove the gain, +3.24% to 738.79 on 22.0% of equity, still 1.7% under the $751.66 re-add. Day change +0.06%, the only sleeve higher; since the 09-22 stake, -2.29% versus -1.29%. NVDA at 78% is the book’s largest single-name risk.

What changes tomorrow

  • August PCE lands at 08:30 ET with the 10-year at 5.255%; a firm print pressures VOO, VIG and XLF and supports Conservative’s cash.
  • Conservative: KO exits on a second settled close below 87.59; XLE exits on WTI under $85; BRK.B is re-bought only on two closes back above its 50-day.
  • Neutral: XLF and JPM stay gated on a steeper curve with wider credit, not a 3.02% drift; MU needs $1,150.
  • Aggressive: NVDA trims at $215; META re-adds only on a reclaim of $751.66, both hinging on the PCE print.
